The meatloaf is fantastic! So is the chicken fried chicken. Get the the mashed potatoes and creamed jalapeño spinach. They're the best too.
Menu full of Staples, with a large specials board. Sides are great. That hot chicken sandwich is like Popeyes on crack
Good comfort food and low key atmosphere. Daily specials and home cooked desserts.
Home style cooking no matter where you're from... ! Another Austin hot spot.
Hoovers is good Southern comfort food. I'm not Southern, not naturalized even after 35 years in Austin so what's I know? I loved the collard greens but last time they were incredibly garlic and vinegary, but I'm thinking it might just have been me, have to try it again to see. The waiter is the same guy I really like, smart and funny with a sly sense of humor . On top of all that, the mustard greens off the menu were great, I always love the cowboy beans, they're more like sweet Boston Baked beans and then again, not. I've had the fried pork chops, man these guys know how to bread and fry. The chicken-fried steak is really good, more of a tempura like batter but not as light. I REALLY like their cream gravy its thinner than you get most places, darker I guess from whatever fat and drippings? We NEVER heard of white gravy growing up and my impression of what you see most aces is "liquid Wonder Bread, with coarse black pepper." I've also had the muffuletta, which I really enjoyed. The half was PLENTY for me and I'm a "BIG" boy. I'm told by som New Orleans natives it's not "authentic", but like I said, what do I know from authentic. The bread is nice, lots of tooth to hold up to the olive tapenade and theres plenty of meat. We dont know mufulettas up thar, but we know a good sandwich. The deserts are very good homestyle cobblers - almost as good as mom's. The only thing that bugs me about Hoover's is having to remember that behind the barrier so you're not looking at the restrooms, there's a wall between the men's and women's, and if you don't approach right, you'll have a bit of a walk. Also, we've had some disconnects because the wait staff don't deliver the food. It got ugly once, years ago, with a server who thought we were squatting on his table on a packed Friday night. But that was years ago and is water under the bridge, over the dam, down the drain, or something. Still disconnects do happen, like "did I order rice? I can't remember..." Love this place, love Mr. Alexander.. When they first opened, my friends and I all said "Finally! HOOVER'S is the place that (local place famous for music patronage and southern style comfort food) almost gets right!
Sad to admit, this was our 1st time to visit Hoovers. Delicious comfort cooking.
Pleasant atmosphere and tasty food, low sodium, good service.
Was absolutely delicious! Huge portion size. Great family experience.
The Margaritas stout! Great food!
The food is ALWAYS outstanding!
Excellent place for homestyle cooking. It is an Austin staple, and great place to meet up.
Long wait but it was worth it because the food was delicious
Fantastic homestyle cooking!
What can I say. That chicken from the smokehouse was on point. Perfect smoke, flavor, and just falling off the bone good. Service was excellent. Aaron was on time and on target with the service. You guys have something good going here, obviously. I travel all over the world and this place just became a top shelf spot to visit while in Austin. Keep it up.
The entree was great, but the mash potatoes were less than lukewarm. I had a special item, a fried chicken sandwich with spicy sauces. Not too busy during lunch. The prices are a bit too high for comparable meals ($15-18 for about the same quality as places that serve the same for $12).
FABULOUS HOME COOKING
Luv Hoover's. If you want down home cooking this is your place. Food is large portioned and very tasty. Staff was a little off this night but this is still a go to place in Austin!
Good soul food fir the soul. love everthing about this place....the corn bread is a must try!
